Diary of a Wedding Planner June 2011

Nothing gets me more in the mood for love than planning a wedding and this time of year weddings are around every corner!  This year has been an outstanding year for weddings and the trends I have seen are quite intriguing. From the colors of the wedding party attire to the change in veil choices there is so much to think about! These trends are a mixture of developments you might see in real life weddings and Second Life weddings, but you will notice how no matter the world, wedding trends are surprisingly universal.

Outdoor weddings
Gone is the notion that indoor weddings are a better choice. Couples are choosing earthly elegance for their ceremonies. Whether it is a tropical wedding at sunset or a garden with fireflies, overdone structures where the guests feel cramped are making their way out.

Honeysuckle- The Color of the Year
Honeysuckle is the color of the year and it is perfect for summer! A bright pink with soft reddish undertones will make any bridesmaids look amazing. Table linens and flowers in this colorful hue are sure to enrich any white wedding venue and make quite a statement.

Fusion Weddings
Since couples are more likely to be from the other side of the world, quite literally in Second Life, I am seeing a growth in multi-cultural ceremonies. From including an exchange of the Claddagh Ring to reciting the Cherokee Wedding Prayer, this trend is sure to take off in a world where love has no boundaries.

Romance is Back
Soft, romantic dresses with rich textures are making a comeback from a time when elegance was an everyday occurrence. These dresses flow gracefully and move naturally instead of having large poufy skirts. Dresses don’t come in white only either, with ivory and blush showing up occasionally as gorgeous color choices!

Veils of a Different Nature
The veils we all imagine cascading down behind the bride are taking a backseat to some more significant hair and headpiece choices. Brides are electing to go with a distinctive style for their hair accessories. Non-traditional veils such as short veils and bird cage veils, or even no veil at all, are prevalent this year. Hair combs, tiaras, or barrettes give the bride a look that is all her own!

Sit Back and Relax
Couples looking to enjoy their engagement and wedding day choose to hire a planner who takes care of all the details for them. Planning your own wedding can leave you pulling out your hair and couples are saying no to this. They want to sit on their deck with a cold drink and enjoy each other. Let someone else worry about matching the centerpieces to the cake!

Unique Bridal Party
This trend can be simply different outfits for the Maid of Honor and bridesmaids or inviting your female best friend to be your Best Man. No matter how you interpret this, this decision to balk at tradition and follow your own tune is growing! Choose the attire you think suits your wedding and arrange the bridal party the way you want it. It’s your wedding after all!

A Touch of Luxury
In a budget conscious world, couples are setting aside money to splurge on one or two expensive items for their wedding. It might be getting that amazing Greek inspired wedding venue, opting for more photos of this joyous occasion, or having a video made of the special day. Whatever that piece of luxury is for your wedding, add it on!

Intimate Gatherings
The newly engaged are cutting out the fat, so to speak. Smaller, more intimate weddings are a strong trend as couples want to enjoy their guests. Inviting an abundance of people to hardly speak to them at the reception is becoming tiring for the bride and groom. Its time they share this special day with only those who are essential to the celebration!

Two to Tango
Both the bride and groom want to be involved in the planning. No longer do the grooms just sit by and say “Whatever you want, dear.” They have a voice and want to be a part of picking out the venue and decorating the cake. The wedding couple is truly a couple planning their wedding now, not just a bride and groom that is MIA.

Each year brings new paths for the wedding world to embrace and yet the one trend that never changes is why people get married. Professing love that you can’t quite word but must share with the world is universal. We have all felt that flip in our stomach when our eyes meet another’s and we are drawn to that person; shivers up our spine when we feel a hand brush ours; that weak in the knees feeling when our lips meet for that first kiss. Love is such a fragile and fickle emotion and yet we seek it out every single day of our lives. A wedding is the ultimate expression of love, so whether you follow the trends or not, let your wedding speak for the love you have found.
